   Climate Change and You

Tackling Climate Change

Climate change is one of the major issues facing the Government today. It is unusal, in that it is both an international issue and a local issue. Over 40% of Co2 emissions in the UK come directly from what we do as individuals. Without everyone doing their bit, we cannot hope to halt the effects of climate change.

Each of us has a 'carbon footprint'. Everytime we use our cars, heat our homes or turn on a light we add to our individual footprint. You can calculate your footprint here.

What Is The Government Doing About This?

  • Working with manufacturers to remove inefficient goods from the market
  • Encouraging developers to build new homes close to good transport links, to reduce the need to drive
  • Improving building regulations to make homes more energy efficient
  • Introducing 'Energy Performance Certificates', so that when you buy a house, you know how energy efficient it is
  • Working with manufacturers to provide more information about the products that they produce and supply, including gas, electricity and water
  • Working to phase out inefficient light bulbs

What Can I Do About Climate Change?

  • Improve the insulation in your home. This could also help you to cut your energy bills by upto £160 per year.
  • Use timers and thermostats. If you take control of your heating, you can save energy and money. Turning down your thermostat by 1 degree could save you 10% on your heating bill.
  • Switch to energy saving light bulbs.
  • Wash your clothes at 30 degrees and in full loads.
  • Turn off appliances rather than leaving them on standby.
