Bridgend
Based Transitional Support Scheme wins National
Award

The Howard
League for Prison Reform is one of the UK’s most highly respected
charities dealing with justice issues. Francis Cook their Chief
Executive is known to be highly critical of poor standards within
the criminal justice system. To receive a letter from Francis
Cook urging MP Madeleine Moon to visit the Transitional Support
Scheme (TSS) for South Wales, Gwent and Dyfed Powys to see the
winner of their award for the outstanding delivery of a community
based service meant a rapid response.
Madeleine
Moon MP met with Sandy Philips the Project Manager of TSS and her
staff at Parc Cottages on Thursday 8th January and found
the comments of Francis Cook to be totally accurate. The
Transitional Support Scheme is a mentoring service available to
prisoners who have drug and alcohol misuse issues, had a custodial
sentence of less than 12 months and are resettling in Wales
following release from prison. The mentoring support staff
helps to motivate offenders, on release from prison, to tackle
issues as diverse as, accessing drug and alcohol treatment,
homelessness, employment, training, education, relationship issues,
income and financial problems.
Following
the meeting Madeleine Moon said,
‘I was very
impressed by the work being carried out by the Transitional Support
Scheme and the dedication of the staff. If we are to help people with
chaotic lives, who are also struggling to rebuild their lives while
moving away from substance abuse schemes like this are invaluable.’
‘I am delighted that this G4S scheme based here in Bridgend but
covering a large part of Wales has won national
recognition.’
