Madeleine Backs Maggot Therapy
Local MP Madeleine Moon has today given her support to local company Zoobiotic. Zoobiotic are based in Bridgend and use sterile maggots as a treatment to clean and clear
infected wounds and ulcers.
Having visited Chief Executive of Zoobiotic, Dr Tim Coombs, Madeleine learnt about the historic use of maggots for medical use. Maggot use has been in decline as a result of
antibiotics, such as penicillin.
However, with resistance to these drugs increasing, the discovery that clinical trials have shown that maggots can clean wounds in a fraction of the time taken by conventional
treatments could prove to be a vital breakthrough.
The revival of this age old treatment may have huge implications in the battle against MRSA, as well as helping to save the NHS miilions of pounds each year.
Madeleine said: "I was impressed at the effectiveness of this technique and I am proud that a product as potentially beneficial to so many people is
being produced here in Bridgend."
Madeleine has also submitted and Early Day Motion and held an adjournment debate to highlight the company and call upon the Department of Health to investigate the possible
implications of this treatment.
