“Parliament & You (2)” – Local MP’s Consult Local People
As part of their recent consultation on the role of Parliament and constitutional reform, local MPs Madeleine Moon and Huw Irranca-Davies held an event entitled ‘Parliament
& You (2) House of Lords Reform at the Aberkenfig Bible Church on Thursday 20th September.
The event was a follow up to an event held on the 20th July about the role and future functions of the House of Commons. Baroness Gale, an active member of the House of Lords,
attended the event to explain the current role of the second chamber.
Bridgend MP, Madeleine Moon said: “Huw and I have been really pleased with the success of these two events, as they have allowed local people to have their say on the future
role of their Government.”
The House of Lords discussion has attracted interest from a number of local people and a lively debate was held on various topics, including:
• Is there a need for a second chamber?
• What should the function of a second chamber be?
• Are the current powers of the House of Lords enough, or should their powers be strengthened?
• Should the Second Chamber be elected?
Madeleine concluded: “Huw and I have had positive feedback from everyone who attended the House of Lords event and we will be looking to hold more consultation events like this
in the future, as they are a positive way for local people to have their say on national issues.”
