Bridgend MP Supports Local Campaign To Ban tobacco Advertising Displays From Our Shops

Madeleine in Chamber

Local MP, Madeleine Moon yesterday spoke in the Health Bill debate in Parliament supporting a backbench amendment to outlaw cigarette vending machines in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Madeleine Moon highlighted a petition she had received from the Porthcawl branch of Cancer Research UK. The petition which included signatories from across the town, including smokers, ex-smokes and non-smokers, indicated the very strong feeling that people locally wanted the removal of tobacco advertising displays from shops.

The amendment was subsequently passed by the Commons without a vote being needed. Madeleine Moon MP has since stated:

"The tobacco industry constantly recruits young people to replace those who give up smoking or die each year. This ban will help to stop new generations taking up smoking. This is the most significant step forward in public health since the ban on smoking in public places.

I also commend the work of the Porthcawl Cancer Research UK group in undertaking the petition highlighting the risks of smoking and cancer."
