Bringing Parliament to Bridgend Schools

Students studying for their Welsh Bacca- laureates at Archbishop McGrath Catholic High School enjoyed an afternoon of Westminster-style debating last week when Madeleine Moon joined them for a debate on immigration.

With their teacher Louisa Winstanley acting as Speaker of the House, the students spoke at length about the issues around immigration in the UK and what policies their ‘government’ should follow. Addressing each other as ‘My honourable Friend’, the Year 12 students debated passionately about whether there should be caps on immigration or whether we should allow free movement in and out of the UK.

Speaking after the debate, the MP said “It is so refreshing to see young people taking an interest in politics. The students had clearly prepared well for the debate and were keen to get their points across. This was a really enjoyable day and I hope the students keep their passion for politics long after today.”

“Working with schools to show students how decisions made in national government affect them is so important if we want to encourage more people to take an interest and get involved”, Madeleine added.
