Local MP Signs up to Climate Pledge

Madeleine Moon MP has added her name to the campaign to try to cut the country's carbon emissions.

The 10:10 campaign calls on every one of us to cut our own emissions by 10%. Cutting 10% in one year is a bold target, but for most of us it's an achievable one, and is in line with what scientists say we need right now.

By signing up to 10:10 we're not just promising to reduce our own emissions - we're becoming part of a national drive to hit this ambitious goal country-wide. In our homes, in our workplaces, our schools and our hospitals, our galleries and football clubs and universities, we'll be backing each other up as we take the first steps on the road to becoming a low-carbon society.

The UK is already among the world leaders in pledging to cut our country's emissions by at least a third by 2020 in our UK Transition Plan, cleaning up our energy sources, supporting energy efficiency and adapting the way we travel. And it's also our job to support people to make a difference themselves.

In the past year, 1.5 million homes have received some form of insulation, with enough professional loft insulation installed to stretch from London to Sydney and back, resulting in savings on fuel bills.

Madeleine said:

"I'm signing up to the 10:10 campaign because it gives me a chance to really show I can make a difference on a personal level to tackling climate change. People in the Bridgend constituency are already making an effort but signing up means that effort is visible. Everyone in Bridgend who signs up can be part of a big national effort - all of us pulling together to prevent global warming.

"It's also a chance to send a message to all those politicians meeting in Copenhagen at the end of the year to agree a deal on how the world can stop runaway climate change. Britain's Climate Change Secretary Ed Miliband will be representing the UK and the more UK citizens make their voice heard the better he can argue for an ambitious deal. China and the United States need to know that we in Britain really care. Each one of us who signs up is making a commitment personally - world leaders in turn must work as hard as possible for a deal that will leave the planet safe for our children and grandchildren."
