Madeleine Moon MP supports Bowel Cancer Faster Diagnosis Week

Bowel Cancer symptomsSpeaking at an awareness event in Parliament Madeleine Moon said “Bowel Cancer is a common cancer which kills almost half the people who develop it in this area. Few people talk about it, yet it is preventable and curable. Most of the people who develop bowel cancer can go on to live normal lives if the cancer is treated early enough.”

Members of Parliament are leading a campaign – starting with Bowel Cancer Faster Diagnosis Week starting June 28 2010 – to encourage everyone to get to know the key symptoms, to get involved in the NHS screening programme for bowel cancer and to act quickly on key symptoms and screening.

In this area, over 3200 people will be diagnosed at some time in their lives and nearly 1500 will die of this cruel cancer. We are among the slowest in Europe at being diagnosed with bowel cancer.

The NHS screening test is being sent to every person aged 60-69 in Wales and is an easy way to check your health. Madeleine said, “Over half the men who received the test, however, have thrown it away. Many lives have already been saved by taking the test with the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening programme – please do the same as I did and take the test when it arrives!”
