Madeleine welcomes free diabetes testing

Diabetes UK has revealed that as many as 50,000 people in Wales may have diabetes but are not aware of it. This increase is due to changing lifestyles and diets, with less exercise and more unhealthy foods meaning that even children are getting the disease.

Speaking about the statistics, Madeleine Moon MP stated: “If diabetes goes on undiagnosed, it can have serious consequences such as heart disease, kidney disease and strokes. Early screening is so important if we want to continue enjoying life and caring for ourselves.”

Symptoms of diabetes can be difficult to spot, but they include passing urine more frequently (especially at night); increased thirst; extreme tiredness; slow healing of cuts or blurred vision.

The Bridgend MP added: “Many people aren’t aware that they can get free screening tests at their local pharmacy or GP clinic. The next time you’re in town, pop into your local pharmacy to ask about screening tests and you may find that they can offer you a test for free. If we can diagnose the disease earlier, we can avoid the serious consequences later on.”
