Madeleine Moon MP visited HMP Parc/YOI today, to thank the young people at the Young Persons Unit for entering the Christmas Card Competition.
On Friday morning Madeleine met with Lisette Saunders, the Deputy Director and the Arts Intervention Officer Phil Forder, Staff and young people.
Madeleine said: "I was pleased with the work of the Young Persons Unit in creating a design for my Christmas card 2008. Over 500 cards with the winning art work was sent out to the Prime Minister, Ministers of State, MP's & AM's, Ambassadors, Businesses, local organisations and individuals."
The young man who won the competition has already achieved a grade B in GCSE and is now studying to AS Level and shows a great deal of talent.
The Art Unit has an impressive display of work and has been successful in winning many awards last year from the Koestler Trust for artwork and sculpture.
Also their art work is to be displayed in the National Museum of Wales from May 2009, helping to raise awareness of the quality of the work undertaken at Parc.
Madeleine said: "The Education Unit at Parc, where the art class is based offers young offenders the opportunity to re-engage with education, gain qualifications and skills which will offer them employment opportunities once they leave prison."
The prize for the winning design was awarded to the Art Unit to help towards further art materials. The card was printed by social enterprise Every Link Counts in Maesteg and sponsored by Spectrum Technologies Ltd.
