President elect Juan Manuel Santos of Columbia described his country as champions of kidnapping, degrading human rights, killing and displacement of people. Columbia, he said, was the nearest thing to hell as a country. I met President elect Santos last week as part of a delegation from Justice for Columbia which included 3 Westminster MP’s, 6 MEP’s, 2 senior lawyers and the General Secretaries of 6 UK, 1 American and 2 International Trades Unions. Colombia is the size of France, Germany and the UK combined and has a population of 45 million people. You may know the...

Madeleine joined politicians from all parties to call for the release of all political prisoners in Burma. She posed with the name of "Mie Mie" written on her upturned palm to mark the 12th anniversary of the first major uprising in Burma, which began on 8 August 1988, and to show her support for the imprisoned former student leader. Mie Mie was one of thousands of students who took to the streets of Rangoon to call for democracy and humnan rights in 1988, and in August 2007 she led a women's movement march against the regime. The aims of the review are to consider older people’s experience, both good and bad, when they were hospital in-patients, and then to make practical recommendations where people were not treated with dignity and respect.

Parliamentary news update Monday 28 June 2010 The Conservative-Liberal Democrat government has been hard at work recently, and Labour has been working even harder in opposition to try to stop unfair measures. This is an update of some important developments in Westminster. The coalition government has commissioned a review into privatising more of the Royal Mail. Under the banner of ‘modernising’ the service, the government hopes to inject private capital and practice into this service. The same goes for local media, where the government is looking at relaxing the regulations on television broadcasting so...

In practice the United Kingdom has not used cluster munitions since May 2008, after it signed an international convention outlawing them. All stockpiles will be destroyed by the end of 2013.
