Bridgend MP Madeleine Moon hosted a NATO event at Carnegie House last Tuesday. Following on from the NATO Summit held in Newport in September, Madeleine invited Hugh Bayley MP, President of NATO Parliamentary Assembly to the Bridgend constituency.
I was delighted to welcome Hugh Bayley MP to Bridgend to give a talk on the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. I was pleased to see the event supported by pupils from the local Comprehensive Schools, as well as local organisations, businesses and constituents.
Hugh talked about the 28 NATO member countries, and how the Parliamentary Assembly worked and provided interesting information on defence spending and defence capabilities. Hugh was very engaging and following his talk there were many questions from the audience about current situations across the world that NATO was involved in.
Despite the defence cuts Madeleine and Hugh explained that the UK has the fifth largest defence budget in the world ($57.0bn) with the United States of America as the first ($600.4bn), followed by China ($112.2bn), Russia ($68.2bn) and Saudi Arabia ($59.6bn). Questions ranged from the Ebola Crisis, cyber warfare, maritime surveillance and the Russian threat, the depletion of the UK’s defence assets and the future of the armed forces. Both speakers emphasised that with Russian military airplane incursions into European and North American airspace back at cold war levels this was an important time to understand the role of NATO.
Hugh said: It was an excellent outreach opportunity for me to speak about the work of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly to an interested audience in Bridgend.
The event was free, but generous donations were received for the Bridgend Food Bank. More events are planned with the next being on 26 February 2015 with Joan Whalley MP talking on Climate Change.
