Hello and welcome to my website.
I have been fortunate enough to serve as the Member of Parliament for Bridgend since May 2005 when I replaced our previous MP Win Griffiths at the General Election. During my time as an MP I have been fortunate enough to hold a variety of roles and responsibilities. During the previous, Labour Government I sat on the Environment Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee between the years 2005 and 2007. I served as a Parliamentary Private Secretary in the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and Energy and Climate Change Departments between 2007 and 2010.
I joined the House of Commons Defence Select Committee in 2009. The Committee appointed by the House of Commons to examine the expenditure, administration, and policy of the Ministry of Defence and its associated public bodies. The Committee usually meets once, but often twice a week when the House of Commons is sitting. This involves conducting enquiries into a wide range of issues. Witnesses, often senior members of the military, give evidence to the Committee and at the end of each inquiry, a report is published. You can find out more about the Committee and our current inquiries here.
I was elected to the United Kingdom Delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly in 2010. Established in 1955, the assembly brings together members of parliaments from all NATO member countries and some associate parliaments. The Parliamentary Assembly provides a forum for discussion on a wide variety of security, political and economic matters. More details about the UK delegation is available here.
In Parliament I Chair a number of All Party Parliamentary Groups, including on Suicide and Self Harm Prevention, Kidneys, Parkinson’s, Motor Neurone Disease, Reserves & Cadets, and the RAF section of the Armed Forces Group. With each of these groups I organise meetings in Parliament to raise awareness of key issues, help write reports to call for much needed change, and champion their cause in the Commons by organising debates and directly questioning Ministers.
Before my election my career was in health and social care. I held various positions across South Wales, the last of which was with the Inspectorate for Care Standards. Before my election in 2005 I also held a number of local political positions within the community. I was a Councillor on Porthcawl Town Council for many years, serving as its Mayor on two occasions. I have also sat on Bridgend County Borough Council and Ogwr Borough Council.
In carrying out my position as MP I hold regular surgeries at my Bridgend office and across the constituency.
I have regular columns in The Glamorgan Gem, Seaside News Magazine and The Glamorgan Gazette.
I take a keen interest in Policing and regularly join the South Wales police on operations and meet with senior officers. I am fully supportive of the Council in its strategy to regenerate Bridgend Town Centre and also its plans for the ongoing Porthcawl regeneration scheme. I am a member of Rotary which enables me to keep up dated on the local business situation.
All my work is possible because of the support of my office teams in Westminster and Bridgend. They keep me well informed and the wheels turning, and I know they appreciate the support and help from you all.
