The Government’s Brexit plans were thrown into further disarray this week when the Speaker ruled that the Prime Minister would be unable to bring her Deal back to Parliament without a significant change.
Although the Government has attempted to portray its inability to command a majority in the House as the fault of Members, the fact is that the Withdrawal Agreement doesn’t have support and the responsibility lies with the Government to provide something more credible. As they have failed to do this up to this point, Parliament is slowly taking control out of the Government’s hands. The Article 50 extension agreed with the EU on Thursday night allows Parliament enough time to explore alternatives and try to reach a consensus on a sensible and workable way forward.
